DANIEL SHAPIRO continues to gain recognition as a leading interpreter of Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, and Brahms, and as a teacher and coach at the Cleveland Institute of Music.  He has given critically acclaimed performances across the United States, in Brazil, Britain, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Korea, and China, at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.  This season he performs his third complete cycle of the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas; previous live performances of all the sonatas can be found on this website. His DVDs of all of Schubert's major piano sonatas and his CD of Beethoven’s “Diabelli” Variations have received enthusiastic reviews.

He has taught at CIM for the past twenty-three years, during which time he has become known as an inspiring teacher who helps students achieve profound understanding and develop vivid interpretations of the great masterworks. His students have won important competitions and obtained teaching posts at prestigious universities and schools of music.

As a chamber musician,  Shapiro has had the great fortune of collaborating with some of the world’s leading musicians, including Jaime Laredo, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Joseph Silverstein, Cho-Liang Lin, Roberto Diaz, Ronald Leonard, Franklin Cohen and Frank Rosenwein.  He has performed regularly with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra.  He has also performed with the Cavani, Mirò, Linden and Rossetti Quartets, and has released chamber music CDs on the Harmonia Mundi and ASV labels. His Beethoven sonata collaborations with violinist Jaime Laredo can be found on youtube.com.

His musical scope also includes the study of conducting: he has worked with Daniel Lewis, Victor Yampolsky, Fritz Zweig, and Gustav Meier. He made his conducting debut at sixteen at Tanglewood, and  conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni with the Akron Lyric Opera.

His musicianship has  been enhanced and deepened by extensive collaboration with singers: listening to and working with them has been a source of tremendous inspiration.  He studied art song with Gwendolyn Koldofsky and opera with Natalie Limonick, and was an opera and art song coach at UCLA.

A native of southern California, Shapiro began the study of piano at the age of six.  His teachers included Leon Fleisher, John Perry, Russell Sherman, Joanna Graudan, and Reginald Stewart.  He studied at the University of Southern California and at the Peabody Conservatory, where he received his doctorate.

Shapiro is an expert Scrabble player--he is one of the top ranked players in Ohio, having won or placed in several tournaments.  He lives with his family in Cleveland Heights.

Luna Lee is an active pianist in San Diego County. As a winner of multiple piano competitions, she has been marked by impressive achievements and a deep love for classical music. In 2023 and 2024, she took 1st place in the MTAC Piano Sonata Competition Level 10. Luna was also successful in the MTAC Concerto Competition Division II, when she placed 2nd; in 2024. She also won the Encinitas Youth Piano Concerto Competition, resulting in her first official concerto performance with the North Coast Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14. She won honorable mention in the Chopin Festival in 2023 and the MTAC Piano Sonata Competition Level 9 in 2022.

Beginning piano at the age of 5, Luna developed a deep connection with classical piano under her previous teachers, Yumi Choi and Hyo Young Shin. Luna has constantly pursued her passion for music despite the hard conditions of moving to America from South Korea when she was 11. Under the current guidance of award winning pianist, Chetan Tierra of the San Diego Piano Academy, she has been developing a rich and diverse repertoire.

Besides the numerous achievements Luna brought to her career, she continuously performed in the San Diego Piano Academy Student Recitals over the years to develop a variety of skills, including stage presence, cooperation with other players, and overall performance skills. Whilst focusing on classical piano, she also explored different genres of music. For instance, she participated in her middle school Advanced Jazz Band for 2 years, achieving her goals of ranging over various genres of music while also receiving awards: the Louis Armstrong Award, and the Outstanding Musician Award. Luna’s passion for music stretched onto different instruments, too. She played in her middle school orchestra as a cellist for 3 years, receiving the Most Improved Award, and learning more about the symphonic parts of classical music.

Under the guidance of Chetan Tierra, Luna continues to develop and improve her skills. With an inspiring future ahead, Luna proceeds on with captivating audiences with her dedication and love for the piano.

Yoyo Wu is a gifted musician from San Diego, California. She exhibits remarkable versatility and talent in her piano and marimba performances. Yoyo embarked on her musical journey at age six beginning with piano, and her passion and skill quickly grew under the guidance of Dr. Nguyen. Yoyo sees music as a form of expression and a source of personal growth. She especially loves how music teaches life lessons, such as the benefits of mental practice, which connect to concepts like state-congruent memory in psychology, and the importance of small details in contributing to a larger picture. Music has also allowed her to form connections and learn from her peers, helping her grow not just as a musician, but as an individual.

In summer 2024, she gave her first full piano solo recital featuring works by Bach, Chopin, and Beethoven. As a pianist, Yoyo participated in and won many competitions, including the 3rd place in the 2024 MTAC Concerto Competition, 1st place in the highest division of the 2023 MTAC Sonata Competition, and 1st place in the 2023 American Protege Piano and Strings Competition, leading to a performance at Carnegie Hall, New York.

In addition to her piano skills, Yoyo is also an accomplished marimba and percussion player. She currently serves as the percussion principal of the San Diego Youth Symphony (SDYS)

Orchestra and has won various competitions as a marimbist, including 2nd place at the 2024 Great Plains International Marimba Competition in Oklahoma and 1st place at the 2024 SDYS Concerto Competition.

Beyond her performance achievements, Yoyo is deeply committed to sharing her love for music with her community. She leads the Carmel Valley Summer Symphony (CVSS), a student-run non-profit organization. Every summer, they organize a symphony orchestra with around 80-100 middle and high school students in the San Diego area to learn, rehearse, and perform music for free. Through CVSS, Yoyo ensures that her passion for music spreads far beyond her personal performances.
